This is a great recipe for those who love the taste of a classic homemade beef burger. Obviously, you don’t need to mince your own meat for burgers, but if you do, tri-tip is a great cut of beef for it. Fairly lean but tender and tasty. Likewise, you don’t have to use this mixture for burgers, it will make great meatballs, meatloaves or I guess any meat shape you like.

The recipe makes 4 regular or 8 smaller burger patties.

Ingredients

Burger Patties
  • 500g Quality Mark beef mince

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste

  • ½ cup parsley

    chopped
  • 1 egg

  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 Tbsp lemon zest

  • kosher salt

  • black pepper

To Assemble
  • handful coleslaw

  • 4 gherkins

  • 1 heaped tsp parsley pesto

  • 1 tomato

    slices
  • slices cheese

    melted onto bun
  • 1 red onion

    pickled and sliced
  • burger sauce

  • 4 burger buns

Method

Patties

Mix all the ingredients together well in a bowl.

Shape into patties of your desired size.

Fry in a medium to hot pan with a little oil until browned on each side and cooked through.

To Assemble

Toast buns in pan, melting the cheese slices on the bottom half of each burger bun

Spread a tablespoon of parsley pesto on each toasted bun bottom, add coleslaw, gherkin slices, pickled red onion slices, and tomato slices, a burger patty and a healthy spoonful of the burger sauce.

Alternatively, serve with your choice of burger fillings and most importantly - enjoy!
