Lamb: four facts you need to know!
We all know that Kiwi lamb is delicious, but did you know it packs a huge nutritional punch too?
This National Lamb Day we are shining a spotlight on why this juicy meat is not only a feast for your taste buds but also a powerhouse of easily absorbed essential nutrients. Let’s get stuck in!
Four reasons why lamb is a nutritious choice:
1. It packs a protein punch
Each mouthful of lamb is packed with high-quality protein, meaning it ticks all the essential amino acid boxes. The protein in lamb can help with brain, muscle, skin and bone health and is easy to digest and absorb. This means your body can quickly send it where it needs to go – talk about efficiency!
2. The iron is haem iron
If you’re feeling tired and sluggish it might be time to up your iron intake and get your levels checked. Lamb is a tasty source of iron is full of easily absorbed haem iron. Iron is a busy mineral, it carries oxygen around the body, supports our immune system and give us energy. The bonus of lamb’s haem iron is it that the body can soak it up like a sponge and power through these jobs a bit easier.
3. It's got B vitamins galore
Full of B vitamins, 100g of lamb can provide around three quarters of your daily requirements. These clever vitamins (B12, niacin, pyridoxine, riboflavin and panthothenic acid) are like a superhero squad which help your body run smoothly. Some B vitamins help with energy levels and some help with skin, brain, blood and eye health, so there’s something for nearly every body department.
4. It's high in zinc
Last but not least, this mighty mineral supports immunity, repairing the body, energy levels and can enhance your taste and smell – talk about an all-rounder! With every bite of delicious lamb, you are getting a good hit of zinc and topping up your levels. Fun fact: This is actually really important because our bodies don’t naturally make zinc, so we need to get it through the diet.
We know you didn’t need another reason (or four) to love lamb, but there you have it! The next time you’re tucking into a succulent lamb chop or a fragrant lamb kofta, know that wrapped in those flavours and textures are a good dose of high-quality nutrients to nourish your body.
