Dean Thompson, Head Chef at Schnappa Rock in Tutukaka, has held his role for six years and boasts a decade of culinary experience at just twenty-seven. Passionate about hospitality, Dean has crafted a menu centered on fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients, showcasing New Zealand beef, lamb, and produce from the restaurant's garden.

Dean’s culinary roots trace back to his family’s passion for beef and lamb, influenced by his father and his butcher great-grandfather. By 14, he was pursuing a culinary career, earning a diploma in culinary arts at Waiariki Institute. At 18, he joined Smith and McKenzie Steakhouse, where working on the grill under pressure shaped his skills and career direction.

Now as head chef, Dean values personal and professional growth and enjoys sharing his expertise with colleagues and future chefs.
