A definitive ranking of our schnitzel recipes

Few things brighten up a meal like a crispy slab of delicious schnitzel - and if Twitter is to be believed, Kiwis overwhelmingly agree.

For those not in the know, schnitzel is a thin slice of meat that is usually thinned by pounding it with a meat tenderizer. Most commonly, the meat is then breaded before frying. As one of the few people that have tried all of the schnitzel recipes on our website (correct me if I'm wrong), I thought I'd take it upon myself to offer my definitive ranking.

12. Parmesan and Herb-Crusted Lamb Schnitzels

This schnitzel recipe has a lot going for it - the flavours pair really well together, Allyson Gofton came up with it, and it's the quickest to whip up out of all our schnitzel recipes (20 minutes from the kitchen counter to the dinner table). The kids love it.

11. Beef Roulades with Crunchy Honey Pumpkin

This recipe would be ranked higher but it's a roulade using beef schnitzel rather than a schnitzel in the traditional sense and I didn't want all of you @ing me on Twitter. Seriously, it's a pretty special recipe - the crunchy honey pumpkin is next level. Perfect for colder months.

10. Cheese and Mushroom Stuffed Beef Schnitzels

Don't judge a book by its cover because while the recipe image could use an update, there's nothing about this recipe that needs to change. I'm a huge fan of blue vein cheese and mushroom, and even more so when it's stuffed into crumbed schnitzel.

9. Beef Schnitzel with Cherry Tomatoes, Beans, Peas, and Potatoes

If you're after a schnitzel recipe that tastes good but is ready in under 15 minutes, then this is the one for you. It's simple enough that my 8 year old can help with the prep.

8. Italian Crumbed Beef Parmigiana

I love this recipe because it offers a really good way to jazz up your everyday beef schnitzel (I mean why not go the whole nine yards and make it a lamb schnitzel). My top tip is, budget-permitting, using balls of fresh buffalo mozzarella.

7. Beef Olives

I hear you, I hear you - beef olives in a schnitzel list (schnlist?)? Firstly, this recipe doesn't feature any actual olives, rather beef olives are an old dish dating back to medieval times. The ‘olives’ are little parcels of stuffed schnitzel which are then cooked in the slow cooker. It's at number six because it's delicious - and Allyson Gofton came up with it, and who am I to question the foodie wisdom of Allyson Gofton?

6. Melting Mediterranean Lamb Rolls

Here's one a little out of left-field, but trust me - it's awesome. While some of you may be a little miffed by the lack of breading in this recipe, Wikipedia has my back as technically the term schnitzel refers to the meat.

Now that we've got that out of the way let me tell you why it's a must-eat. There are so many flavours packed into these little lamb rolls - prunes, pistachio, mozzarella, capsicum, and lemon zest to name just a few.

5. Beef Schnitzel Burgers

If you're looking for an on-brand way to celebrate #BurgerThursday then this is the recipe for you. While most of you may be more used to mince patties, schnitzel is actually great in a burger - it offers a lot of great texture which is amplified here by the inclusion of shredded cabbage (or coleslaw if you must) and cauliflower pickles. It's a schnitzel burger, what's not to love?

4. Cheesy Crumbed Beef Schnitzel

This beef schnitzel recipe from 'The Kiwi Country Girl' (Laura felt too familiar), is seriously yum. And seriously cheesy. I love it, the kids love it, and it only takes half an hour to put together. Winner, winner, crumbed beef for dinner.

3. Lamb Parmigiana

While you might not often see lamb schnitzel in restaurants, this Italian-inspired dish demonstrates why the rich meat is made even better when breaded and fried!

2. Beef Schnitzel with Dill and Avocado Slaw

This beef schnitzel offers more of a cheffy take on the family favourite. While the meat is obviously the star, I also love the crumb (panko breadcrumbs, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, poppy seeds), and the dill and avocado slaw with capers and pickles that's served alongside it.

1. Crumbed Beef Schnitzel with Creamy Cheese Sauce

Quality never goes out of style and this classic crumbed beef schnitzel recipe has been one of the most cooked recipes on our website for years. I can't get enough of it. Tender beef, crunchy panko crumbs. creamy cheese sauce. We're onto a winner here.
