New Zealand beef and lamb are naturally high in iron and are a great first food option for babies and toddlers. This is a recipe the whole family can enjoy which can be adapted for the age and stage of your child.

Ingredients

For the meatballs:
  • 500g Quality Mark beef mincei

  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 2 Tbsp milki

  • 1 Tbsp mixed herbs

  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil

  • 1 garlic clove

    crushed
  • ½ an onion

    finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 red capsicum

    finely sliced
  • 2 carrots

    grated
  • 1 courgette

    grated
  • 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice

  • ½ cup reduced-salt beef stock

  • ½ cup water

To serve:
  • 1 cup pastai

  • seasonal greens i

    steamed
  • cheesei

    grated

Method

Heat oven to 180°C.

Mix mince, breadcrumbs, egg, milk and herbs together in a bowl.

Roll the mince mixture into small balls and place on a lined oven tray and bake for 20 minutes.

Make the sauce while the meatballs are cooking by sauteing the onion and garlic in oil until soft.

Add the tomato paste, capsicum, carrots and courgette and stir over heat for 5 minutes.

Add the canned tomatoes, beef stock and water and stir. Cook for 10 minutes on a medium heat.

Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and combine.

Serve the pasta sauce with a sprinkle of cheese on top and the meatballs and seasonal greens on the side.
