Inspiration Ultimate side dishes for MatarikiUltimate side dishes for Matariki
Matariki is a special time to come together, to gather with whānau and friends, and to share stories, memories, and hopes for the future. It is a moment to reflect on the year that has passed; and to look forward with optimism to the year ahead. This season invites us to honour not only those who sit around our table but also those who are no longer with us.
Matariki is also a time to celebrate the bounty of the land and sea, known as harikai, and to appreciate the nourishment it provides. It is a moment to pause and embrace rest, allowing ourselves to recharge and reconnect with what truly matters.
At the heart of Matariki is the table, usually featuring a beautiful spread showcasing the rich food story of Aotearoa. From the freshest vegetables to succulent beef, tender lamb, and the finest kaimoana (seafood), the Matariki table is a feast for the senses. We’ve gathered some of our favourite vegetable dishes to complement these iconic proteins, creating a celebration of flavours that honours the land, the seasons, and the spirit of Matariki.

Apple, spinach and cranberry salad
An easy side dish that both kids and adult alike love, and it pairs beautifully with beef, lamb, or seafood dishes.

Kumara and Cauliflower Quinoa Salad
This salad turns kumara and cauliflower into the rockstars of the table – it’s all in the dressing of sweet orange and tangy mustard.

Creamy Potato Salad
A classic but one, no table will complete without. Look for tangy pickles to help balance the creamy dressing.

Greens, dates and orange salad
We say spinach, but use whatever salad greens you have on hand – rocket, mesclun are all delicious too.

Pear and Walnut Salad
A classic combination, the humble pear is given the royal treatment. Add a little blue cheese too if you’re feeling fancy.

Brussel sprouts waldorf salad
Whether you make the lamb bacon to go with it or not, this salad packs a hearty punch. We love the grilled sprouts tossed through the spiced dressing.

Spiced honey carrots
The humble carrot isn’t featured enough and this side dish takes roasted carrots to a whole new place. The chickpeas add extra fibre and protein and you can leave the harissa out if you’re serving to little ones.

Coconut, lime and sesame greens
Grab seasonal greens, whichever one you like the look of and toss them in this dressing for your dish to be the one that everyone raves about.

Raw energy salad
Perfect for the cooler months, this salad is like a slaw but is loaded with nutrient packed vegetables and seeds for those healthy fats.

Stuffed kumara with kale
Like a baked potato but better, these stuffed kumara are the perfect plate if you’ve been invited to join a celebration. Look for the baby kumara in the shops, they’re a little sweeter.
